The great thing about making house portraits from photos, is the magic of ‘artistic licence’. Unattractive satellite dishes on your roof? They can be edited away with the swish of a brush. Front wall in need of a repaint? I’ll re-paint that for you.
Hilary Light has been renovating and documenting on her design and architecture blog Ecomodernstudios. As her home is ‘work in progress’, Hilary asked me to make a few changes on her house portrait.
Instead of hanging tiles on the facade I painted cedar wood panels, the garage door became grey instead of white. Also, the plants in the garden were painted taller than they are at the moment, as if they had been established for a few years.
The result is a portrait of the bungalow with renovations complete and garden fully grown.

I’ve always loved glimpsing old local photographs as it makes you appreciate your part in the buildings history and this portrait is a part of our buildings journey.
How many people have images of their home which really capture the essence of living there now? I think this portrait is something to treasure as something which has captured our lives here at this precise moment in time.
A home is the most expensive item we’ll ever buy and one which offers us refuge, comfort and a place to just be. I think it’s important to celebrate it and the style of the portrait is so light, breezy and happy that it’s something to gaze at on a Winters day to remind us Summer will be back on it’s way!
The beautiful style of the portrait is a unique artwork offering a sense of place. I think it’ll be a fantastic talking point for friends and family visiting.
